What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is usually caused by inflamed or swollen sinuses. Despite treatment, if your inflammation persists for longer than three months, you might be suffering from chronic sinusitis or rhinosinusitis. Chronic sinusitis is commonly triggered by allergies, infections, nasal polyps, or other medical conditions.

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths in your sinuses. They develop because of chronic inflammation triggered by allergic reactions,  infections and things that you may be sensitive to in the environmental, such as pollution. Nasal polyps are usually harmless when they’re small. However, if they swell and grow, they can clog up your nasal passage, obstruct airflow, and block the openings to your sinuses leading to blocked drainage and higher risks of infections. They also block airflow to your olfactory (smell) region high up in your nose and are a common cause of smell loss.

While nasal polyps can occur in anybody at any age, they are more common in adults, and usually require surgery to remove them. Often, maintenance medications help prevent nasal polyps regrowth.

If you suffer from chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps, it’s best to discuss your treatment options extensively with a professional. Dr. Davis can help diagnose your condition and recommend suitable treatment plans.
